The SRH Pinot Noir is all about complexity and balance. From the inception of Dragonette, the winemakers have believed that blending Pinot Noir from diverse vineyard blocks and sites would create a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Wines form the warmer parts of the SRH would provide dramatic fruits and baking spices, wines from the cooler portions would provide, higher toned red fruits, fresh herbs, minerals and great acidity. Over the years, the winery has selected vineyard sources for the purpose of crafting this wine, and in 2015 they blended grapes from 6 different vineyards to make this wine sing the song of the Santa Rita Hills – beautifully pure, fairly rich red fruits, excellent spices and big but beautiful structure. The wine is carefully aged on their lees to limit movement and retain freshness and energy.
Full ruby red to the rim. On the nose, the very young wine displays rich, ripe, but exceedingly fresh red fruits (black cherries, red fleshed plums, strawberries) along rhubarb, baking spices (nutmeg), cumin, wood smoke and bright fresh herbs (bay leaf, summer savory), and hints of river stones and chalk. On the palate the wine is beautifully proportioned, medium to full-bodied, with dense concentrated red fruits (fresh Bing cherries, top shelf maraschino cherry, strawberry liqueur), lifted by round acids and citrus (orange peel, orange zest) and then layered with hints of smoke, earth (pine needles, redwood, and wet earth) and granite. The wine is balanced by solid structural elements, with plenty of glycerin, round acids and pliant, long chained tannins, giving energy and focus. The wine is precociously enjoyable, yet will age well over the medium term (7-10 years).
"Earthy, forest floor aromas of mulberry, damp sage, bay leaf and elderflower show on the unique nose of this bottling from a dramatically set vineyard on the southwestern edge of the appellation. There's an Old World sensibility to the palate, full of dried flowers, dust and wood spice, with elegantly dried, slightly tart berry fruit and a touch of caramel on the deep finish." – Wine Enthusiast, 93pts
